How to Create a Calming Bedtime Routine for Your Baby
A consistent and calming bedtime routine can work wonders for your baby’s sleep—and your own sanity. Babies thrive on predictability, and a soothing wind-down ritual helps them understand that it's time to rest. Here’s how to create a routine that sets the stage for sweet dreams.
1. Set a Consistent Bedtime
Try to put your baby down at the same time every night. A predictable schedule helps regulate their internal clock, making it easier for them to fall—and stay—asleep.
2. Start with a Wind-Down Window
About 30–45 minutes before bedtime, begin dimming the lights and reducing stimulation. Turn off screens, lower the volume, and switch to calm activities like quiet play or cuddles.
3. A Warm Bath
A warm bath can be incredibly soothing and helps signal that bedtime is approaching. Keep it gentle and relaxed, using calming scents like lavender if your baby tolerates it.
4. Gentle Massage or Lotion Time
After the bath, a quick baby massage or moisturizing session can help your little one relax further. It’s also a great bonding moment.
5. Quiet Time with Books or Lullabies
Read a short, soothing story or sing lullabies. The sound of your voice is comforting, and over time, this part of the routine becomes a familiar cue for sleep.
6. Feeding and Cuddles
If your baby still feeds before bed, do this last, in a dim, quiet room. Keep the atmosphere peaceful to avoid waking them up too much after feeding.

The exact steps don’t matter as much as doing them in the same order, at the same time, each night. With time, your baby will learn these signals mean it’s time to rest—and sleep will (hopefully!) come easier.
